The Nanofluid Technology Behind Hydromx®
Hydromx®, is a revolutionary heat transfer nanofluid that utilizes Nano-Thermo™ technology. Hydromx® uses nano-particles that are suspended in a stable state to increase the speed of heat transfer, by heating up (or removing heat from) the fluid and transferring energy in a shorter amount of time, thereby requiring significantly less energy (and saving money).
Hydromx® is most suitable for closed-loop heating and cooling systems where efficiency is achieved by diminishing run-times of associated equipment. Hence, the life of the equipment is extended together with lower maintenance costs.
The NanoThermo™ technology of Hydromx® increases the heat transfer rate. No matter what the energy source, or how efficient the boiler or chiller is, Hydromx® improves the efficiency of the whole system by transferring energy more effectively.
Furthermore, Hydromx® is specifically formulated to prevent corrosion, calcification and algae in the systems. It is certified under the BuildCert Chemical Inhibitor Approval Scheme to inhibit corrosion of metallic and plastic parts, and prevent scaling up of the system, particularly the boiler.
Corrosion is one of the most common problems that hydronic heating and cooling systems encounter. This specific problem may cause your system to destroy zone valves, tanks, ball & check valves etc. In order to prevent this issue, corrosion prevention agents are added into the mixture, which in turn decrease the thermal conductivity of the water-based solution. With Hydromx® in addition to the savings you get, your system will be protected against corrosion. Hydromx® efficiency in the field of Corrosion protection is verified by BuildCert certification (DWTAS Industry Standard for the Performance of chemical inhibitors for use in Domestic Hot Water Central Heating Systems and BuildCert regulations) and by ASTM-D 1386 standard.
Hydromx® provides complete protection against scaling without decreasing the efficiency of your system. Domestic water that is high in mineral content (or “hard water”) may cause the buildup or scaling of mineral (calcium) deposits in hydronic heating/cooling systems. Scale buildup reduces system performance in a number of ways. If your system uses water as the heat transfer fluid, scaling can occur in the collector, distribution piping, and heat exchanger. In systems that use other types of heat transfer fluids (such as glycol, antifreeze), scaling can occur on the surface of the heat exchanger. Scaling may also cause valve and pump failures on the potable water loop.
Freezing & Burst Protection
The most common anti-freezing agent that is widely used throughout the industry is glycol. While this agent protects the system against most freezing temperatures, it also seriously reduces the thermal conductivity of the fluid within the system. Hydromx® achieves very safe freezing temperatures (-39°F) that protect the system against freezing while providing energy savings.
Another problem against which Hydromx® protects your system is the occurrence of pseudomonas and legionella bacteria. Due to its unique formula, Hydromx works to eliminates these dangerous bacteria from closed-loop heating and cooling systems without diminishing the system’s efficiency.
Hydromx® in Cooling Systems
In cooling systems, when compared with water, Hydromx® makes heat transfer 35% faster – transferring the same amount of heat in much shorter time. The energy efficiency of Hydromx® is based on reducing the run time of the compressor, and Hydromx® increases the required ambient temperature limits for Free Cooling up to 5-6ºC. It is possible to achieve up to 35% saving in cooling with Hydromx®, and as high as 37% in highly controlled environments such as a data center.
Hydromx® in Heating Systems
Hydromx® reduces the total runtime of your heating system by transferring the energy much faster and more efficiently. In addition to this, the heat lost on flue gas temperature (3°C) is also decreased by Hydromx® usage. The same amount of energy is transferred much faster, creating efficiency and savings on your energy bill. All of these gains have been proven and reported by Enertek which is a leading boiler R&D company, showing a productivity increase of 29% on average.
The Green Heat Transfer Fluid
In order to protect the sustainability of the life on Earth, it is imperative that we decrease the amount of CO2 emissions that is released into the atmosphere. Nowadays, the CO2 emissions which are the single biggest cause of global warming, have become a big threat with the global increase in energy demand.
Hydromx® is one of the greenest projects of the world. The LCA and EPD (EPD10329) certifications which are prepared by independent testing and approval organizations show clearly that Hydromx® decreases the CO2 emissions by 26.6% compared to water. This decrease in emissions thanks to Hydromx® use spikes up to 36.6% when compared to a water-glycol solution.
It has been verified by the LCA and EPD reports that Hydromx® contributes to the new LEED v.4 standard in three different topics as a green and sustainable solution. These are:

Hydromx® contributes approximately 10 points for LEED qualification when it is used within new constructions.
According to the 2011 data of the UN regarding the environment, the yearly CO2 emissions worldwide have reached 28.8 Trillion tons. The IEA (International Energy Agency) data suggests that if only 5% of the world used Hydromx® today, the value of the yearly energy savings would exceed 50 Billion USD. This would also eliminate 86.5 tons of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere, equivalent to the CO2 absorbed by 231 million trees.
What Academia Says
Comparison tests of the heat transfer through Hydromx® with that of water shows that both fluids subjected to the same heat source, the temperature reached by Hydromx®/water mixture was approximately 10˚C higher than that of the 100% water. The difference in total energy transferred to the heat sinks up to and including the steady state period (i.e. after 3870 second from the start of experiment) was calculated to be 37% higher. The quicker response of the Hydromx®/water mixture gives it an advantageous position in terms of heat transfer when compared to water alone in both heating and cooling application.*

According to simple convective experiments, Hydromx® heat transfer is considerably higher compared with water. This can only be explained by the special composition of Hydromx® and the enhancement of the heat transfer attributed to the nanoparticles in Hydromx®. Heating produces convective currents which result in additional heat transfer mechanisms attributed to the movement of the nanoparticles, and consequently the total heat flux transferred is increased. Thus, Hydromx® is expected to carry heat much better in real applications than water, because of this convective mechanism.**
